Frequently Asked Questions

Climate

Nicaragua's climate is rather consistent, depending on the season and location. Monthly average temperatures in January range from 23°C (73°F) to 30°C (86°F) and in July ranges from 26°C (79°F) to 31°C (88°F). There are two seasons: a green season, from May to December, and a dry season, from January through April. In the green season, rainfall varies according to region. Norome Resort & Villas averages only about 45 inches of rain per year and rains typically last less than one hour in this season.

Clothing

Casual wear is acceptable most of the time but keep in mind that Nicaraguan's take pride in their appearance and commonly wear dress shirts and pants/long skirts. Due to the temperature remaining consistent most of the time, heavy sweaters or jackets will rarely if ever be needed. Long sleeved shirts are recommended for travelers visiting rural or jungle areas due to the biting bugs (usually mosquitoes) found sunrise or sunset.

Credit Cards

All major credit cards are accepted in Nicaragua at most major retailers, but will not be accepted at smaller shops or markets. Bank machines can be found occasionally. If you are using a foreign card at a bank machine, you have the choice of having your funds disbursed in Cordoba’s or US Dollars.

Currency

It is recommended that you arrive in Nicaragua with US Dollars as Travelers Cheques are not widely accepted and ATM's are not easy to find. Nicaragua operates on both the Cordoba and US Dollar, which financial institutions will provide a credible rate of exchange when converting currency, which averages C$ 20 Cordoba’s for every $1.00 US (February 2009).

Electrical Current

110 Volts, 60 cycles AC (Identical to North America)

Entry Into Nicaragua

A valid Passport and a $5.00 US Entry Fee is all that is required to enter Nicaragua. You will be required to fill out an Entry Application prior to entering, which is provided for on your plane, so please have a pen available as well as your flight and destination information.

Health Insurance

It is recommended that visitors to Nicaragua obtain traveler's health insurance before leaving their country because health insurance plans often do not extend coverage for services received outside the country of residence. Hospital and medical services in Nicaragua are some of the best in Latin America with the Capital City of Managua recently opening a state of the art modern Health Care facility.

Visitors taking medicine prescribed by a doctor should bring a copy of the prescription, in case it needs to be renewed by a doctor in Nicaragua as well as to avoid delays upon entering or exiting the country.

Tipping

Tips or service charges are not usually added to a bill in Nicaragua. In general, a tip of 10% of the total bill is given. This applies to servers, barbers and hairdressers, taxi drivers, etc. At hotels and airports, bellhops and doormen are generally paid $2 total for the handling of luggage.

Safety

Nicaragua boasts one of the lowest crime rates in Central and South America and is considered one of the safest countries to visit in these areas. All of the civil unrest that Nicaragua was renown for in the past has long ended and the country is moving forth as a safe haven for expatriates and international tourists.

Food & Water

All Villas are provided with two bottles of fresh water in each bathroom and two in the kitchen every time the room is cleaned. The restaurants on-site also meet all International standards in order to ensure that your stay is as pleasant as possible and you will rarely have any problems eating in the restaurants throughout Nicaragua, although it is suggested that you avoid food from street vendors due to the lack of refrigeration.
